Talking together

A toy that talks is not a toy that listens

A boy whispers a secret into a teddy bear's ear while battery-operated toys sit ignored on the shelf behind them

The bestselling talking toy in India right now is a dancing cactus. It records what your child says and squeaks it back in a chipmunk voice. Children find it hilarious, for about a week.

Search for a talking toy and that is mostly what you will find: repeat-after-me plushes, phrase-button phones, dolls with six sentences. They all talk. Almost none of them listen.

Why repeating runs out

A toy that repeats gives your child their own words back. That is a mirror, and mirrors are entertaining, but they do not answer questions. Once the novelty fades there is nothing left to discover, which is why these toys migrate to the bottom of the basket by month two.

What listening actually does

Language researchers describe learning to talk as a game of serve and return. The child serves a sound or a question, someone returns it with meaning and a new serve. It is the return that builds vocabulary, logic, and confidence. A toy that only repeats never returns the serve.

So when a toy calls itself interactive, put one question to it: can it answer something it has never heard before? A button toy cannot. A repeat toy cannot. Only a toy that understands speech and forms a reply can, and until recently that did not exist at toy prices.

A short checklist

If you are choosing a talking toy for a child under five: does it reply, or just repeat. Does it ask questions back. Does it speak your home language. Can you read afterwards what it said. And does it work without a screen in the room.

We are building Lumi to pass that checklist: a plush friend that listens, answers, then asks the next question, in up to 10 home languages, with every word readable in the parent app. If your house has a bored cactus in it, the pre-order list is open.

More reads like this on the journal, or meet the friend behind it on the Lumi page.
